Collect for Christmas Day

Almighty God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure virgin; Grant that we being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

Advent Prayer for Watchfulness

Almighty God, we beseech thee, grant unto thy people grace that they may wait with vigilance for the advent of thy Son our Lord, that when he shall arise from thy right hand to visit the earth in righteousness and thy people with salvation, he may not find us sleeping in sin, but diligent in thy service and rejoicing in thy praises, that so we may enter in with him unto the marriage of the Lamb; through his merits, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Prepare Thou the Way in Us

Our Father, we give thee thanks to-day for the mighty yearning of the human heart for the coming of the Saviour, and for the constant promise of thy Word that he was to come. We know that our own souls are in darkness and sin without faith in him who comes to bring God to man and man to God. We bless thee that our hearts can so answer from their wilderness the cry, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord." In us may the rough places be made smooth and the crooked straight, the mountains of pride brought low, and the valleys of despondency lifted up. O our Father, prepare thou the way in us now, and may we be ready to welcome anew thy Holy Child, our Saviour from sin. Amen.

Prayer for Christmas Eve

Lord, our God, in reverence and adoration we stand before thy fathomless and inexpressible love. Thou art not enthroned worlds distant in the heaven; thou dwellest in us and around us. Thou hast come in thy Son, into the world, to seek the lost, to make joyful the sad, to make rich the poor, make strong the weak, make blessed the sinner. Oh, help us above all to be able to understand aright thy kindness, to receive willingly thy grace, to open ourselves heartily to thy love.

Let this Christmas mark truly a bringing of grace for each house, for each person, young and old, for poor and rich, for high and low, but primarily for the lowly and the abandoned, the tired and the despondent, the bowed down and the worried! Let us deeply experience the holy Christ festival of this year; let it be to us a blessing now and for all time!

Lord God, eternal Father, appear for us in Jesus Christ. Amen.

For the Christmas Season

Our Heavenly Father, we thank thee for the Christmas season with all its gifts and gladness. We thank thee for the love in so many hearts that finds expression in gifts and good-will; for home-gatherings and reunion of separated ones; for home joys and social festivities; and for all the gladness that brightens the weary world in this Christmas time. May we know that all these blessings are showered upon us by the hand of the Babe of Bethlehem. May not the abundance of material gifts smother the spiritual significance of the day and the gifts cause us to forget the real Giver. Move us with generous impulses to share our good things with others, and may the Spirit of Christ touch our lives with a new spirit of love and joy that will bless and make beautiful all our days. And this we ask in his name. Amen.

A New Nativity of Faith

Let there be in us, as we bow at the cradle of Jesus, a new nativity of faith and hope and the charity that thinketh no evil and abideth forever. May the festival of his birth touch us to a new gentleness toward all our fellow men in whom, however dimly, thou dwellest, and move us to more liberal devising in behalf of those who know the bitterness of want. Freely we have received the greatest Gift; freely may we give our best. We ask in Christ's name. Amen.

Collect of St Nicholas

O God, who didst honor the blessed Pontiff Nicholas by countless miracles, grant, we beseech thee, that by his merits and prayers we may escape the torments of hell. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God world without end. Amen.

Collect for the First Sunday in Advent

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.

Collect for the Epiphany

O God, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the Gentiles; Mercifully grant, that we, who know thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For unto Us a Child Is Born

The Angels' Song at Bethlehem

8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Luke 2:8-14, King James Version

A Virgin Shall Conceive

14Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

The Wise Men from the East

1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

Matthew 2:1-11, King James Version

In the Beginning Was the Word

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 1:1-14, King James Version
